For Presidents’ Day in 2018, we upstate to tackle one of my favorite local hikes, Breakneck Ridge. I was starting to train for a trek in India in the coming months and suddenly it was only 7 weeks away. The secret to enjoying this super popular hike comes in two forms: waking up early and starting at 8am, or doing the hike in the colder months. While Ryan had a habit of showing up late for work, when we had something to do outside it was a different story. We trekked upstate on the train and were on the trail by noon or so.
We got a fantastic afternoon view of the Hudson River, stopped on the way home to see the largest indoor Buddha in the western hemisphere (at Chuang Yen Monastery), picked up some ribs for dinner and I think this was also the famous ‘first trip to DeCicco’s’ that spawned one of our myriad inside jokes and sayings. After chopping some wood - the four of us had a great dinner together, watched a movie (this detail escapes me now, Ryan fell asleep on his hands) and overnight we got about 8” of fresh snow. Meseret got to show off his driveway surfing skills the next morning as we shoveled out.
